The songs, which have plagued the series since the first sequel came along, remain and are mostly forgettable (in fairness, country music star Reba McEntire does a good job with 'Look for the Light, but it's no ' If We Hold On Together'), while the voice acting is far from stellar for the most part. While there is a fairly amusing sub-plot where Petrie unintentionally becomes the king of a group of small dnosaurs known as ' Diggers', it is fairly short lived. These little touches will no doubt be appreciated by the hardcore dinosaur fans who have followed the series since childhood.Ī few nice aesthetics aside, there's not a huge amount to recommend in Journey of the Brave. The meat eating dinosaurs also move quite a bit more realistically, running with a more horizontal gait, than in previous TLBT films. It is refreshing to see a children's cartoon series embrace the fact that many dinosaurs did indeed have feathers, while Jurassic World seems hell-bent on making up weird in-universe excuses to hide from it. Comic relief character Wild Arms (voiced by Damon Wayans Jr) is a fully feathered Nothronychus, while there are also feathered tyrannosaurs as well. While the dinosaurs are still cartoony and existing characters retain their outdated aesthetic for continuity reasons, newer creatures look a lot more like what 21st Century science tells us how they should appear. One area where The Land Before Time has moved with the times is that of scientific accuracy.

It's quite disappointing that during the series' nine year hiatus nobody could come up with a story that veered ever so slightly off the beaten path.

And there are some songs to be sung along the way.

Littlefoot and Cera have an argument mid adventure and go their separate ways, but manage to resolve their differences in time to rescue the person they were looking for. There is some mild peril involving sharp-toothed predators, but nobody gets hurt. Littlefoot's grandparents tell the kids not to leave the valley. When he fails to return from said long journey, Littlefoot and his friends venture forth out of the Great Valley in order to find him.ĭespite having a completely new director and writing team, Journey of the Brave is so very formulaic in that it follows the very same plot beats of pretty much every other generic Land Before Time sequel. The story focuses on Littlefoot awaiting the return of his father Bron (perhaps unsurprisingly, Kiefer Sutherland does not reprise his role here) from a lengthy migration. Instead, Journey of the Brave is a direct follow up to 2003's The Great Longneck Migration - the tenth film in the series. Given how big a gap there was between Journey of the Brave and the previous Land Before Time movie, The Wisdom of Friends, it is perhaps surprising that the new creative team involved in the production didn't opt to reboot the series and start over, or at least make a standalone adventure which may or may not be in continuity with the preceding films.

While the series once released a new film on a near annual basis, the law of diminishing returns saw interest in the franchise cool off to the point where no new TLBT movies were produced for nearly a decade. With Hollywood's dinosaur renaissance in full swing, and a belated Jurassic Park sequel rising a wave of nostalgia toward box office success, The Land Before Time makes a comeback of its own, albeit on the small screen. For those of you who don't speak Roman numeral, Journey of the Brave is the fourteenth feature-length installment of the long-running Land Before Time series.
